CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Emma sat down at the computer and decided to check her email before starting to journal. Emma’s breath caught in her throat. She had two emails sitting in her inbox: one from a pastor at an LGBTQ-affirming church out in Indiana and another from an online support group for people coming out later in life.

Was this really her life right now? She breathed quickly as she opened the email from the pastor.

Emma,

It is nice to hear from you. I enjoyed meeting you at that conference a few years ago. I hope all is well. Here are some resources for your friend. Let me know if they need anything else. I’m always happy to talk.

Emma looked at the seven different book titles: What the Bible Really Says about Homosexuality; God and the Gay Christian; Torn; Undivided; Untamed; Shameless; and Unclobbered. She hesitated for only a moment before searching for them and purchasing them for her e-reader.

Ten minutes later, she was on her couch, settling in to read the first one.

The first book on the list reminded her of a seminary class she took in grad school. It was dense and thankfully not very long, but it made a solid argument. The author walked through multiple Bible passages like Sodom and Gomorrah and the passage in Leviticus when they called a man lying with a man an “abomination,” going back to the Biblical Hebrew and Greek and explaining their historical context.

It made sense. It nullified the anti-gay arguments and made her question everything she’d been taught for so many years.

Where had this book been hiding? She finished it up at midnight and planned to start the next one tomorrow.

Maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t going to hell.

Maybe she could actually keep her faith through all of this.
